Gather close, seekers, and mind the candle wax. Tonight the crystal ball shows two German luxury houses circling each other in the fog like duellists at dawn: Mercedes-Benz, the dignified star of Stuttgart, and BMW, the Bavarian with its foot already twitching on the throttle. The question laid on my velvet cloth is simple and ancient: which brand suits you most? The spirits have answered. A crown has fallen, and it did not land on the star.

First, what the tea leaves actually say, minus the incense. According to Wikipedia's entry on BMW M, BMW's performance arm builds around responsiveness and sharp turn-in, while Mercedes-AMG has made fast versions of almost everything it sells, flagship sedans and SUVs included. Reviewers have long matched the BMW M3 against the Mercedes C63 AMG as direct rivals in the same sporty compact class. The engine-room omens lean Bavarian too: in Ward's Ten Best Engines rankings, BMW (Mini included) has collected forty-one awards to Daimler and Mercedes' twelve.

But no tarot deck is all Suns and Stars. Mercedes can draw its own good cards: Mercedes-Benz vehicles ranked above average for build quality and reliability in J. D. Power's 2011 US studies, even if its durability reputation had wobbled in the late 1990s and early 2000s. And BMW has its Tower card. The electric iX was criticised over its design and interior after launch, and the iX, i4 and i7 were recalled over battery module problems.

And now the reading itself. On Morfi's opinion markets, where people back their opinions with real money, BMW glows at 68% consensus, with Mercedes-Benz close behind at 32%. Trading opened less than a day ago, with 12 unique traders putting $17,314 behind their convictions. So yes, the orb has crowned a winner. It is also clearly not a landslide. The engine trophies and the driver's-car reputation seem to pull the crowd toward Munich, while Stuttgart's comfort and reliability story stops the star from vanishing completely.

The propeller spins, the star flickers, and Madame Odds asks for another cup of tea.

Now my own verdict, and it's pure opinion straight from the smoke. I have read this card before: when the orb crowned BMW over Audi, the Bavarian struck me as a brand people pick with their pulse. Mercedes is the car you'd want to be chauffeured in to your own coronation. BMW is the car you'd steal to escape it. Romance favours the getaway driver, and the crowd, the old romantics, seem to agree. Still, a star that shines this close behind isn't fading. It's waiting.

What to watch next: whether the early edge holds as more traders arrive, and whether reliability worries or BMW's electric stumbles start pulling backing toward Stuttgart. The candle is still burning and the market is still open. Come to Morfi, join the market, and put your money where your horoscope is. The orb is listening.
