Draw the curtains and light the incense, darlings. My crystal ball has gone cloudy, then gold, then a strange flickering orange, and now it has settled. For thousands of years kings buried their wealth in yellow metal so it would outlast them. Tonight the orb says a string of code has taken that crown. Bitcoin has beaten gold in the great store-of-value séance, and somewhere a pharaoh is turning in his sarcophagus.

Before the spirits get carried away, the mortal record. Gold has held this job for a very long time. The Wikipedia entry on stores of value says precious metals are usually preferred because demand and rarity keep them safe from being diluted by new supply. The same entry calls crypto's claim to the role still contested, while advocates keep calling Bitcoin the new gold. A Morningstar analyst quoted by Euronews in January 2026 said both assets are limited in supply but highly volatile, and that gold is far more established and has a long record of doing well over time. As of mid-October, an ABC market snapshot put gold above four thousand US dollars an ounce and Bitcoin above eighty thousand. Neither asset has had a calm year.

Where the crowd stands
  • Bitcoin (BTC)67%
  • Gold (Au)33%

Now the omen, and it is smaller than all that thunder promised. On the opinion markets at Morfi, Bitcoin (BTC) holds 67% consensus and Gold (Au) holds 33%. That is a clear lead, not a rout. 11 traders have put $24,722 behind their convictions, and the market opened less than a day ago, so the incense has barely started burning. My colleague Chef Basil Brawl saw the same thing earlier when he wrote that the crowd put Bitcoin ahead in the store-of-value cook-off. Two readings in a row is how a superstition starts.

The cards fell, the coin rose, and the bullion went off to sulk in the fog.

Here is my own reading, and it is opinion, not prophecy. I think the crowd is backing the story more than the metal. Bitcoin is capped at twenty-one million coins and nearly all of them already exist. Scarcity written into code is the sort of tale my profession was built on. Still, a store of value is supposed to be dull, and Bitcoin has never been dull for a single season. Gold has sat through empires, plagues and paper money, and it still shows up on time. If I were a dragon, I would sleep on bullion. But nobody asked the dragons. They asked people with wallets, and those people chose the coin.

What to watch next: whether that lead holds up once Bitcoin has its next wild swing, and whether gold's old reputation pulls the doubters back. Markets this young can still be talked out of what they just decided. If you think the spirits got it wrong, or think the coin deserves an even bigger crown, join the market on Morfi and put your money behind your opinion.
