Well, my dears, I've seen families fall out over the last roast potato, but I never thought I'd watch strangers fall out over which bottle to grab from the cooler. Coca-Cola or Sprite? The dark one or the clear one? It's like asking a grandmother to choose between her grandchildren, except these two grandchildren are already rich and both come from the very same household.

That's the funny part, so let's be clear about it. Both drinks belong to the Coca-Cola Company, which says Coca-Cola is generally the best-selling soft drink in most countries and was named the number one global brand in 2010. Sprite is the younger sibling. It turned up in 1961 as the company's lemon-lime answer to a rival pop, and it has gone on to become one of the firm's bestsellers. In the company's second-quarter 2026 results, Trademark Coca-Cola is reported to have gained value share in non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverages. So the old cola is still doing very nicely, thank you.

But don't count the little green bottle out. According to Wikipedia's Coca-Cola entry, Sprite had more than double Coca-Cola's market share in India in 2023, and even the homegrown cola Thums Up beat the famous red label there. Sprite also leads the lemon-lime aisle, and when PepsiCo brought out its challenger, plenty of people online said Sprite simply tastes better. Mind you, none of this tells us what fans actually prefer. Sales figures are like counting how many slices of cake got eaten without asking who really enjoyed them.

Where the crowd stands
  • Coca-Cola53%
  • Sprite47%

That's where the crowd comes in. On the opinion markets at Morfi, where people put their own money behind what they think, Coca-Cola has the upper hand with 53% consensus from 9 holders. Sprite is on 47% with 7 holders. So far 18 traders have staked $25,039, and the market isn't even a day old. The crowd seems to be going with the old brand's reputation for now, but the India numbers show the clear stuff can win once it's on home ground.

A pixel-art grandmother at a picnic holding up a glass of dark cola and a glass of clear lemon-lime soda.
One glass for the Sunday roast, one for the hot afternoon. Grandma refuses to be rushed.

Now for my opinion, and it's only an opinion. Coca-Cola is the drink you have with Sunday dinner. It's dependable, a bit sweet and a bit serious, like a good gravy. Sprite is what you want on a sweltering day when your feet hurt and you can't face anything heavy. But here's the sharp bit, you young people: whichever one you pick, the same company pockets the money. The real winner of this squabble is sitting in a boardroom, smiling into a glass of both.

Keep an eye on whether Sprite's lemon-lime crowd turns up in numbers once the market gets going, and whether Coca-Cola's early lead holds or goes flat like a bottle left open overnight. If you've got a view, and I've never met anyone without one, come and join the market on Morfi and put your money where your mouth is. Just remember to rinse the glass afterwards.
