The verdict is in. The experiment ran for less than a day, the beakers are still warm, and the crowd on Morfi has named its best AI lab of 2026: Anthropic. The question was a hard one to measure. It wasn't asking who is biggest or richest, but who is best, judged on research quality, model releases, alignment posture and willingness to ship to real users. Picture judging a science fair where every project is a rocket and half of them are still on the launch pad.
The twist is who came second. Last time this rivalry got the lab treatment, my colleague Ada Bytewell reported a dead heat between Anthropic and OpenAI. This time the pairing has changed: xAI took the silver, and OpenAI got pushed down to the lower shelves with everyone else.
Some background for the control group. In May 2026 a private funding round valued Anthropic at just under a trillion dollars, which Euronews reported puts it ahead of OpenAI's last disclosed valuation of about seven hundred and thirty billion. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI members who left over differences in direction, and its published work leans heavily on interpretability, safety and alignment. The other labs had a busy season too. Euronews reports that OpenAI's next GPT model was only now heading for general release after a limited rollout that reporting linked to growing government scrutiny. xAI shipped a new Grok in July 2026, aimed at coding and agentic tasks, and has since moved to monthly releases. Meanwhile Meta Superintelligence Labs dropped its open Llama approach for a model called Muse Spark, which Euronews later reported was trailing the rest of the industry.
Now the readings. Anthropic finishes on 30% consensus, with xAI behind it on 20%. Also on the ballot: 3 other sides. These numbers measure how strongly the crowd believes in each lab, not a headcount of fans. 51 unique traders put $170,306 behind their opinions on Morfi's opinion markets. Read against the background, the result makes sense. Anthropic scores on the criteria where it has invested most, alignment and research, and xAI gets credit for shipping at a pace that feels like a lab that never switches off the Bunsen burner.

Here's my opinion, lab coat fully buttoned. I think the crowd got the reaction right. A lab that publishes how its models work on the inside is doing the science equivalent of showing its working in the margins, and that should count for more than a valuation. Fun fact: in chemistry, the fastest reaction is rarely the most useful one, because explosions are quick too. So I'd call xAI's monthly cadence impressive, but I'm not ready to call it wise. Ranking OpenAI below second also seems harsh to me for a lab that helped start this whole field. Then again, crowds tend to reward whatever has been on their screens most recently.
What to watch next: OpenAI's wider release, xAI's next monthly drop, and whether Meta's Muse line or Google DeepMind can change the readings. With Anthropic and OpenAI both reported to be preparing public listings, this result could get retested soon. Think the crowd mixed up its reagents? Join the market on Morfi and put your opinion where your hypothesis is.

stopped overthinking it, the simple read was right in front of me
inevitable, just early. buying.
the boring answer. usually right.
not selling this for a while, set and forget
the setup is basically pre loaded, just waiting on the trigger
